Many online retailers are now offering free gifts with their mobile phone contracts that vary from games consoles, sat nav and many more options but are they really free?

In most cases the answer is no. By looking more deeply into that website you are more than likely to find the same contract for your chosen mobile phone without the free gift at a cheaper rental price. To be fair to  many retailers, they do not use the word free, but just state that, with this contract you receive an extra product as well as the mobile phone.

Experiment how good these mobile phone deals are

We thought we would experiment to how good these mobile phone deals are, we can’t name retailers and as contracts can change by the day we can’t even be specific about out findings, but what we did come to conclusion is that for the deals we checked, it cost more for the contract and the add on item than if you had just bought the contract and visited a normal electrical store and bought the add on product separately.

So am I been ripped off?

No is the answer, it is just that most mobile phone retailers may have the buying power for mobile phones, but not for the add on product. High street retailers and now supermarkets can buy these add on products in larger quantities than the mobile phone retailers, so probably in most cases, will be cheaper. So when a retailer offers a gadget with the mobile phone contract and then changes the monthly contract to suit, they are probably offering that product at the best price they can.

Compare the rental terms of your mobile phone deal

Compare the rental price of your chosen mobile phone contract with the add on product and without, over the period of the contract. You now should know how much extra you have paid. Then look on the internet to establish how much you can buy the add on product by itself and then compare this to the extra amount added to your contract.

When we did this, we always found it cheaper just to get the contract and buy the product separately from a retailer that had better buying power.
